Scent of Spice

Doha

Arriving in Doha set the tone for a new travel experience. Our hotel is on the edge of Souk Waqif, the market place, looking a little like a set from a movie about the French Foreign Legion. As we stand on our balcony we can smell the spices, rich with cumin. We peek down at the world where men lie languidly on their wheel barrows and families dressed in white and black wander in and out of the cavernous market in search of sweets, house hold goods or maybe even a kitten or a budgerigar. We went for a walk along the Corniche with it's skyscrapers towering with their weirdly twisted shapes and returned on a Dow after some haggling over the price, a necessary part of the experience. Highlight of the visit was a trip to the museum of Islamic Art. Amazing space, beautifully shaped amd desined by I.M. Pei (Louvre-pyramid) to show off the antiquities within. History of Islam in art and artefact, line, design, colour, texture. A feast for the eye. Our first chapter has whet the appetite for more, it's good to be on the road again.
